Young mum needs cooking facilities

Today we were made aware of a young mum of an 11 month old.  They currently live in a cramped studio flat and the only cooking facilities she has are a two ring hotplate and a microwave.  She does not have access to an oven, nor can afford one.  Her sons behaviour is proving challenging, but she has noticed he is much better when she is able to provide him with good meals using fresh produce.  We agreed to send her £100 for her to buy what she feels would be most suitable for her needs.

Young mum with cancer needs help

We were asked to help a young mum of two small children.  She has recently been diagnosed with cervical cancer and is about to start treatment for this, radiotherapy and surgery.  Following the surgery she is going to need a replacement mattress as the one she currently has will no longer be suitable, they have applied for a grant to buy a new mattress for her.  Before she became ill she was working full time and providing for her family.  Since her diagnosis she has had to give up work and apply for Universal Credit.  By applying for this though her previous payments of child tax and working tax credit have been stopped, and her Universal Credit payment last month was just £20 for the three of them.  She is currently trying to buy what little food she can using her credit card and the debt this is causing is stressing her out.  We agreed to send the family £150 so they can buy food and energy for the next month.

Single Mum with one year old in a Universal Credit pickle

Our person in need of help is a young single mum, with a one year old son.  She has recently been moved out of emergency accommodation and into a temporary home.  She has been dealing with the benefits system, claiming Universal Credit.  There have been repeated problems with her claim, when some of the money has been missing, or her payments stopped due to a misunderstanding over her rent.  She has had to resubmit her claim and will yet again have to wait to be paid, having to wait another 4-5 weeks.  Being in temporary accommodation she is under enormous pressure to make sure that her bills are met, in order for her to move successfully on in the future.  We agreed to send over £150 to keep her going over the next few weeks until her payments restart.  In the meantime, our agents that are helping her, and who approached us, are helping her with a nil income form for her rent and council tax.
